C8 HPLC columns provide a useful alternative to traditional C18 phases when slightly reduced hydrophobicity, faster elution, or improved selectivity is desired. Because the C8 ligand is shorter than C18, these columns are less hydrophobic, resulting in reduced retention times while maintaining selectivity similar to C18 columns for many compounds.

C8 columns are commonly selected when:

  • Slightly polar compounds need improved interaction

How C8 Columns Differ from C18 Columns

C8 columns differ from C18 columns primarily in ligand density and surface coverage. The shorter C8 alkyl chain produces a less dense stationary phase, which reduces overall hydrophobicity and surface area. This lower surface density decreases mass transfer resistance and typically results in shorter retention times compared to C18 for similar analytes.

Because of this balance, C8 columns often exhibit selectivity similar to C18 columns, but with:
